Chapter Six: A Deep Conversation

It takes some convincing through text messages, but Sophie eventually agrees to meet me at a restaurant for lunch. As we sit down, I notice that she does not look directly at me with her blue eyes. This is so different from what she normally does that I feel I must say something.

“You’re really upset with me, aren’t you? You hate me now.”

Sophie sighs and then looks at me. “Ollie, I am having a hard time getting past what you wrote about me on that website. The things you claimed that I am doing aren't true at all, but there are those who think now that they are. How do you fix that kind of thing? You really can’t.” She fumbles with her cell phone as a young male server comes to our table.

“Can I get you something to drink?”

“A cup of coffee, please. The sugar and creamer on the side, please.”

The man then turns to me. “And you, sir?”

I look up at him and think about how attractive he is. The server is the sort of guy I would love to see Sophie in bed with while I watch. It is a terrible thing to think while I am already in trouble with her over my fantasies. “I’ll take a glass of water with some lemon.”

“Right away.” He smiles at the two of us and then walks away.

My wife sits back in her seat as she puts the menu down on the table. “I’m not really all that hungry.”

“I’m sorry,” I reply as I realize her lack of appetite is likely tied to what I have done. “Maybe we can share an appetizer?” Sophie nods her head slightly and I look on the menu for something that I know we will both like.

“I saw that the posts are now gone,” she notes quietly as she fidgets in her seat. “At least that’s a little less of a problem to deal with now.”

“Very few actually saw them, honey. I was told by the IT department that the email was only opened by a handful of people at work before they blocked the link. You won’t be hearing from anyone from there.”

“They know?” Sophie’s face turns red. “The IT department at your workplace knows about the stories that you wrote about me?”

“They think it was a hacker that put those links in an email,” I try to explain as I smile slightly. “Honey, it’s all taken care of. The damage is minimal and you don’t have to worry about anything. If your brother does open the email, it will come back as no account on the site. I’ve deleted everything.”

“Good.”

“Here you go.” The server returns with our drinks and places them on the table in front of us. “Are you ready to order?”

“Just an appetizer,” I reply. “How about the loaded potato skins? You like those, right?” I say as I look at Sophie. She nods her head. “That’s all for now. We might want something more later, but just bring us those and some of that ranch dip you make here.
